Self-storage companies are usually quite flexible about what you can and cannot store in your rented unit. While there are usually few restrictions, there are some items that are simply forbidden. If in doubt about storing certain items, contact the site managers and inquire.
The most common restrictions include:
Flammable or Combustible Materials For obvious reasons, these types of materials will cause very real danger to the facility, its personnel, and your own possessions. The list of restricted items includes (but is not limited to) gasoline, fuel, fireworks etc. Therefore, you will usually be required to empty all fuel tanks (including your lawn mower) before storing these items in self-storage.
Animals or Animal Products Strange as it may seem, people have actually attempted to 'store' their pets in self-storage, as they believe they can access them for feeding and care as necessary. This is quite obviously cruel and could result in prosecution. Animal products are also not allowed in self-storage, as they will attract rodents.
Perishable Foodstuffs If you're looking to store the contents of your house in self-storage, it might make sense simply box up the contents of your kitchen cupboards and stick them in the storage unit. While this would be fine for canned goods, there are restrictions on perishable foods and even dry goods as they will attract rodents.
Stolen or Illegal Items Without question, stolen or illegal items may not be stored under any circumstances in a self storage unit.
Firearms Some self-storage providers will allow you to store firearms (unloaded of course since ammunition is combustible) and some will refuse. If you are allowed, you will need to follow the facility restrictions about securing the item(s).
Jewelry and Other Valuables Not all self-storage providers will allow you to store items such as valuable jewelry, coins, antiques and precious metals etc. Some facilities will allow it, but you will be required to show adequate insurance coving the items.
Odors Some self-storage providers will restrict the storage of fragrant items or anything that will cause a significant odor on site.
Aerosols Many facilities will not allow the storage of aerosols or pressurized materials, as there is the possibility that they could burst and cause accidents.
Hazardous Materials Self-storage facilities will not allow the storage of hazardous, toxic or chemical materials on site as they can cause very real damage if they spill or if there is a fire.
Plants You can't store your plants, or any other living thing, in self-storage, as they will attract insects and pests. |
